Higher education remains a major instrument for national development, technological advancement, manpower production, and global competitiveness, yet significant disparities continue to exist between the tertiary education systems of developed and developing countries. This paper examined a comparative analysis of higher education systems in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Nigeria with emphasis on their organisational and administrative structures, funding patterns, research capacity, quality assurance mechanisms, and institutional challenges. The study was guided by Human Capital Theory as propounded by Theodore Schultz and expanded by Gary Becker, which explains the relationship between educational investment and national development. The paper adopted the comparative analytical review method through the examination of relevant scholarly literature, policy documents, empirical studies, and institutional evidence relating to the three countries. Paper revealed that universities in the UK and USA operate with stronger institutional autonomy, diversified funding structures, effective quality assurance systems, and higher research productivity supported by stable government policies and private sector collaboration. The paper further found that the Nigerian higher education system continues to face serious challenges including inadequate funding, recurrent industrial disputes, weak infrastructure, political interference, brain drain, and low research output. The paper concluded that sustainable investment, institutional autonomy, research support, and effective governance are critical for improving higher education performance and global competitiveness. The paper recommended among others, increased funding diversification, stronger quality assurance mechanisms, and improved government-university relations to enhance educational standards and institutional stability in Nigeria.
